Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren presented his final State of the City address to the Chamber of Commerce this week, saying that although the city has had a mild economic downturn in the past year, he is confident mining and forestry will sustain the city for many years in the future.

In his final State of the City address Monday, Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren urged the new city council to stay the course with the Timmins2020 Strategic Plan. Laughren, whose tenure as Mayor ends in late November, was speaking at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon to kick off Small Business Week. A new city council is to be elected on October 27. Laughren is not seeking re-election.

The event is held each year where the mayor outlines the city's strengths and achievements from the past year and looks forward to the next year. Despite a mild downturn in the economy and some job losses, Laughren said he wants the new council to stick to the strategic plan...

...Laughren said the Ring Of Fire chromite project near McFauld's Lake north of Timmins is also hugely important for all of the North, especially for the mining service and mining supply industry in Timmins.“It is the most important mineral discovery in North America in a generation,” said Laughren. “We must continue to lobby both the provincial and federal governments in an effort to mobilize this development, sooner rather than later,” he said....
