What does Canada Day mean to you?
To me, it means living in a country where the majority of others, different than myself, tolerate my differences.

Michael Gravelle and Bill Mauro are headed back to Kathleen Wynne’s cabinet table.

That’s great news for Thunder Bay and all of Northwestern Ontario. Having two voices with a direct and regular line to Ontario’s premier can only mean good things for the region, particularly the Ring of Fire.

But it’s put up or shut up time for Gravelle, who once again will head the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, and the Liberal government.

The Ring of Fire has long been lauded as an economic driver, not only for the North, but for all of Ontario. Many, including former Conservative leader Tim Hudak and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, accused the Liberals of bumbling the file.

They weren’t necessarily too far off the mark.

While the economic climate didn’t help, Cliffs Natural Resources all but walked away from the project under the Liberal watch.

They’ve promised $1 billion for infrastructure, and have steadfastly said it doesn’t depend on federal government dollars – although they’re hoping Stephen Harper and company come to the table.

Gravelle and the Liberals have four years to get the job done.

The Ring of Fire is our future, but the time for talk is over. It’s time for action, it’s time to start seeing shovels in the ground.
