Thanks very much for your detailed responses to all items. The mud is settling down a bit to the bottom of the jar (a big one like one of those in the Plain of Jars), but the water on top is still murky.

Perhaps the water on top should be siphoned out to another jar, and some more alum should be thrown in along with a canoe paddle to give it a few circular swirls. Some clarity will come out, but the water will taste sour (or bitter to others).
