The expression was popularized by the cartoon character Snagglepuss - a regular on the Yogi Bear Show in the 1960s. But before that it used as the family name of several characters in the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta "Ruddigore".
It came rushing up to my consciousness from long-buried recollections of childhood when I needed a nickname - yet I often can't remember what I did yesterday - joys of aging :).
