My mother in law (she lived a relatively simple life) passed away on Monday morning and my wife is in Toronto this week. Her mom was 91 and had a good life, but it doesn't end there.

As power of attourney, my wife has to make sure everything is looked after so that her mom can be buried according to her simple wishes.

Some time ago, my mother in law purchased a plot of land and made most of the arrarangements that she wanted. She paid just over $10,000.00.

I just finished talking to my wife and she informs me that the total costs of the funeral will be in excess of an additional $15,000.00 (one of the cheapest deals around).

She also told me that the people who sold her mom the lot, did not include for digging the plot and filling it in afterwards. Another @1,500.00.

By the time she gets back, she estimates the total MINIMUM costs of dying in this country to be over $28,000.00.

(My wife still has family in Toronto, but she is the oldest sibling. We are very practical people and if she wasn't power of attourney, would probably would have chosen to stay here.)

Seems to me that most people today cannot afford to die.
