Spot on Cockerel, my sentiment and opinion is same re so called TA.

Had courses in numerical analysis and see little technical in TA.

As you say TA is ok for past history but too many variables ( mostly human) involved to make things unpredictable. So I say know those human factors first and most, that is the hardest part and most influential.
