My gut tells me that there is suddenly a large buyer and the shorts are trying to thwart any potential technical breakout which might bring additional new buyers to AUMN.

It is hard to fathom who would continue to feed 472,000 shares into a rising market in merely the first hour of trading. We have already had two sudden sharp spurts taking the stock initially to 4.68 at 9:59 EST and then 4.71 at 10:18 EST, yet alot of additional stock came for sale immediately after each thrust. My guess is the shorts continue to flood the market via their computer programs.
