What I don't get is even with the SP down so low, that the short interest is still at near record or maybe even record highs. In a normal world, these shorts would have covered for a nice profit long before now. Who in their right mind would be still shorting this stock here at the historic low? It's like no one even cares if they make money or not! Can this market be so psychotic that somewhere someone has an offsetting position that can justify driving this company into the dirt? And while I'm primarily talking about AUMN, I am sure that if you were to look at all the other mining stocks the same thing would be going on. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Where is the offsetting long? Financials? Treasuries? Energy? What? Doesn't make any sense. If we could determine the offset here that allows these traders to show a flat position in the midst of the holding of shorts, then we could better understand what it will take to get the foot off the throat of these stocks and also AG and AU.
