US banking giant Citigroup on Tuesday said it posted a profit of $11.3 billion in 2011, slightly more than the year before.

"Overall, we made solid progress in 2011," said Vikram Pandit, Citi's Chief Executive Officer, noting that profit was "up six percent from the previous year.

The company, he said, "reached key benchmarks in our consumer businesses, showing our strategy is achieving results."

A steep drop in revenues was seen at Citi's asset management and brokerage business. In that unit revenue was down 33 percent to $6.4 billion.

Pandit held out the possibility of the firm returning capital to shareholders this year, hinting at a possible dividend payment.

The firm also reported fourth-quarter earnings, which fell to $1.2 billion, down from $1.3 billion in the same period in 2010.
