It wasn't from Microsoft. There was no option to clear the software, no source address or contact, and it didn't configure itself to sit among the Microsoft programmes in the programme menu.

That was a virus, it contaminated NTFS.SYS and was gradually taking down my PC.

From some criminal over in Russia I expect, other than that, somebody trying to hit Microsoft commercially
