TORONTO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Barrick Gold ABX.TO reported a better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit, as increased sales volumes and record-high gold and copper prices more than offset the impact of higher production costs.

The world's largest gold miner said on Thursday net income came in at $896 million, or 90 cents a share. That compared with a year-ago profit of $215 million, or 21 cents a share.
