Ever since the depression years of the 1930's, voters have more often than not during the midterm elections substantially cut back the number of legislators from the president's party in the Congress. It seemed to be a regular occurrence, especially when times weren't too good. Sort of a rebalancing act. Evening things out.
Republicans and Tea Party people are so juiced up and blinded by the midterm election results that apparently they haven't bothered to take a look at a the history of midterm elections in the US. If they did, they'd see that what happened was not only quite predictable but quite temporary in enough cases, so far as the presidency is concerned, to make a thinking person stop and take notice. And quit the chest thumping and smugness. We'll see if anyone does. I doubt it.
It appears, if history is any guide, that the repubs/tea partiers will screw things up just like the others did in the past and be right back at go two years hence, at least so far as Obama is concerned. Already there are signs of increasing conflict between the old guard repubs and the upstart tea party youngsters. Go along to get along probably won't happen.
Note below that all presidents were reelected two years after getting bombed in the midterm.
In 1938 Franklin Roosevelt, dem., lost 71 house seats and 6 senate seats. He was reelected two years later.
In 1946 Harry Truman, dem., lost 45 house and 12 senate seats. He was reelected.
In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower, rep., lost 18 house and 1 senate seat. He was reelected.
In 1982 Ronald Reagan, rep., lost 26 house and and picked up 1 senate. He was reelected.
In 1994 Clinton lost 52 house and 8 senate seats. He was reelected.
In 2010 Obama lost 68 house and 6 senate seats. He will be reelected….imo.
