The focus on the TSX yesterday was on the gold sector. Blow out first quarter results by Barrick Gold triggered the advance. Nice breakout on higher than average volume!

The breakout by Barrick Gold quickly spilled into other major gold producers that also are scheduled to release first quarter results during the next few days. The TSX Gold Index and the AMEX Gold Bug Index quickly broke above resistance.

Major gold producer equities, that broke above resistance, included Agnico-Eagle, Kinross Gold and Yamana Gold.

‘Tis the (brief) season for gold and gold stocks to move higher!

Strength in gold and gold stock happens at an interesting time. Strength is occurring despite strength in the U.S. Dollar. Historically, gold and gold stocks have moved inversely with the U.S. Dollar. Yesterday, the U.S. Dollar broke resistance to reach a 13 month high. That’s an encouraging sign for gold and gold stocks.
