I see you live in an Edmoton suburb so you should probably be aware that the Canadian government has not done anything recently to "outlaw legal ownership of guns." It is on track to shut down the registry of long guns - a billion dollar boondogle. And I believe the ownership of hand guns is tightly controlled although we found one in our Canadian back yard a few months ago - obviously thrown there by an unsavoury individual. You can still own all the long guns you want as far as I am aware.
