Emotion comes into play so forcefully in the market. Here's how I played this one with and without emotion:
Without: I manage my inlaws 401k; I bought 20,000 shares for US .25 and sold it for 2.98, so made them $55,000 in, what, maybe a year or so. They were very happy with that, as was I for them. Didn't get the highest price, but who cares (not saddled with emotion).
With: Bought at various levels, starting many, many years ago at around .20, built up quite a large holding (for me) over the years. Rode it all up, sold a few here and there, bought a few here and there, but essentially hold as many shares now as I ever have. Probably up some overall, but nothing to write home about.
Even though I'm very disappointed in the share price, I'm not even tempted to sell a share. Now, if this were my only holding or a big slice of my portfolio, psychologically I would have to trade it (got to have the action), but I can do that with other stocks, thus quenching that thirst, and just wait for ECU.
How smart have I been? Pretty smart for my inlaws, marginal for myself.
By the way, GWR always makes such a good case, not only with respect to ECU, but to matters economic in general, that it's very tough to find a more sensible position.
I find it all fascinating.
