My fear is that the COMEX is the place that this may be used.

If enough people stand for delivery and the shorts don't have enough gold to deliver, they may be able to protect the exchange for default.

Not fear - hope. If a default brings about a realisation of the real situation, then all hell will break loose. How could they declare force majeur without an explanation?
