Anyone with assets in California should be aware of the news noted below. If California can get away with this (so far they have), other states are sure to follow. Wouldn't be surprised if some haven't already, since it must be a nice, easy money maker. Which reminds me, since FDR got away with calling in gold, some governors or state legislatures may be wondering if they can pull a similar stunt at the state level. Grabbing dormant accounts, etc., is a good start. I imagine the pols will be dreaming up some crazy stuff to get their hands on other people's money.
Anyway, Liz Smith, the gossip columnist, reports today that some "big stars who have bank accounts, stocks and safe deposit boxes in California now find that if they let these accounts go dormant for longer than three years, the state of California is stepping in helping themselves to the proceeds." Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon are just two that already have been nailed in this one.
In addition, some 1300 Brits have had their assets seized including Helen Mirren, Michael Caine, Kate Winslet and others. No mention of any Canadians......yet. According to Liz Smith, a US attorney has filed a class-action suit against California representing at least 6 million furious people who have had property seized under the Unclaimed Property Law.
Here in this part of Florida, gun shops are doing a land office business with reports of ammo shortages. I wonder why.
