US Mint Suspends Production of More Gold and Silver Coins
March 14, 2009 | Filed Under US Mint
The United States Mint has officially announced the suspension of another slate of gold and silver products. The affected products are 2009 dated American Gold and Silver Eagle coins produced for collectors. These coins are considered collectible versions of the bullion coins.
the mint's inability to produce those coins creates opportunities for the rest of us. we saw this last year when the mint abruptly ceased production of the 2008 proof silver eagle coin. they used the remaning blank planchets to try to meet the huge demand for the regular (uncirculated) silver eagle. but at the same time, the proof silver eagle immediately went from being a $32 coin to a $70+ coin.
so if and when the mint resumes production of anything but the plain vanilla gold and silver eagles, those are the coins to buy. they may initially sell for premiums over the spot price compared to bullion coins, but once the mint shuts off their production for good, they could become rarities. just like that 2008 coin, anything that has an artificially low mintage will be worth far more than the bullion coins.
