When looking back at the events of the last decade or so that have lead the US into it's present dire straights, I assumed that their leaders couldn't be that dumb or that ignorant of the consequences of their actions, as they have appeared to be. I had hoped that they were in fact, deliberately engineering a global depression as a way of both buying us some time to prepare for Peak Oil, as well as shocking the populace into accepting preparations they never would have voted for if they had been given the choice.

I could think of only two other explanations that might fit the observable facts. The first was that a foreign power had infiltrated the American political class in order to destroy the United States by trashing its economy, industry, wealth, and currency. Sort of like a reverse neutron bomb, only the people remain and everything else is gone. Unlikely I admit, but a real enemy couldn't have done it better.

The last explanation that might fit the facts was that the United States was in fact, being ruled by a form of organised crime. Criminals so untouchable that they could suck the lifeblood out of America with impunity. The electorate appears to have thrown the old scoundrels out and replaced them with new scoundrels, with the same M.O. How sad.
