You could be spot on with your assessment. I fear eroding confidence in the banking system is taking its toll on reserves. Banks close when they can't produce requested cash when depositors want their funds. What we have been witnessing over the past three weeks in precious metals is all engineered, IMHO, to discredit the dollar's true competition, gold and silver.
