Bullion Gold Stock Disconnect

I don't necessarily think its abnormal for gold stocks to lag the bullion price at all. As a matter of fact, its been a feature of the bull market for years. Just take your GDX:$Gold. Predictions of a GDX breakout vs. Gold have not yet materialized. But, there are some cogent points made here in the following article by the Financial Post:
