CHROMITE
posted on Feb 01, 09 08:32PM
Chromite is the mineral ore of chromium metal, the most important property of which is its capacity to form a protective film on steel that protects the surface against further oxidisation. Steel alloys that contain chromium are therefore ‘stainless’.
Despite the abundance of chromite, commercial chromite deposits are rare and the industry is dominated by production from South Africa, Kazakhstan, Turkey, India and Pakistan (which together account for 80% of world mine production).
