Super-major Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A) (NYSE:RDS-B) is planning to explore for shale resources in the Karoo Basin of South Africa, reported Reuters.

Apparently, Shell advertised the upcoming exploration program in the Sunday Times newspaper.

Shell said that it has applied with the Petroleum Agency South Africa for the right to explore for unconventional natural gas resources in the country.

Oil & Gas Journal reported this summer that three companies were granted a permit to study shale gas in the Karoo Basin. Those companies included Sasol, Statoil and Chesapeake.

Shale gas exploration and production has become a reality in the US and Canada due to technology improvements, namely horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, that have made developing these tight gas resources more commercially viable.

Other regions worldwide are eager to join the shale bandwagon, with exploration starting in India, Europe, Australia and now South Africa.
