Exploration of shale gas reserves is not only underway in France, but also in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and Poland – reflecting a wider search for shale in Europe. Although the size of unconventional gas reserves in Europe is not known, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that Europe sits on approximately 35 trillion cubic meters of unconventional gas, of which almost half comes from shale.
