Alcan to pour $1.8bn into Gove refinery

By Barry FitzGerald
September 11, 2004

Canada's Alcan has joined the rush by alumina producers to capture their full share of the China-led surge in demand for the key alumin-ium raw material by committing to a $1.8 billion expansion of its Gove refinery in the Northern Territory.

The commitment is also expected to trigger a $1 billion investment in new production and pipeline infra-structure to allow Gove to switch its energy supply from high-cost bunker oil to gas.
