EU: Russia, Ukraine ready to accept gas monitors

PRAGUE, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Russia and Ukraine are ready to accept the deployment of international monitors checking the flow of Russian gas destined for the European Union through Ukraine, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

"We have received assurances from both ... that they are ready to accept international monitors," Barroso told a news conference after meeting Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the presidency of the 27-nation EU. (Writing by Jan Strupczewski, editing by Dale Hudson)
