http://www.powerauthority.on.ca/generation-procurement/energy-storage The OPA has received a directive from the minister of energy for procurement of 50MW of energy storage in Ontario for 2014. The process has begun and rfp's are scheduled to be out in March 2014 with the procurement awards to be handed out in May-June timeframe. My understanding is that this is the beginning of assessing the value of energy storage and if all goes well would be the start of widespread usage of energy storage throughout Ontario. Much of the renewable energy we are currently producing is without energy storage and if these projects prove the value of energy storage they will start connecting the energy storage to the renewables already in place. I believe this is a familiar story throughout the world where many renewables (particularly wind and solar) were implimented without energy storage and therefore the market for new energy storage to existing renewable projects is massive.
