Electrovaya, which is located in the Saratoga Technology and Energy Park in Luther Forest, has received a $4.49 million grant through the Energy Department to develop advanced technologies for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, or PHEVs, for Chrysler.

The Canadian-owned company is developing battery packs for 140 experimental four-door Dodge Ram pickup trucks, Olivares said. The battery packs fit under the back seats of the Chrysler hybrid trucks. “We’ll be assembling the battery packs,” Olivares said.

The Malta branch currently has only two employees — Olivares and an assistant — but will be hiring another 10 workers by the end of November, he said: “Mainly technicians, a couple of electrical engineers. Most of the research is done in Canada. They send the kits to us, and we assemble them here.”
