Mississauga's Electrovaya is trying to solve the energy storage problem with a more traditional lithium battery. Its search is for a material that will increase the energy density stored in the battery, hoping to cut its cost and weight while increasing the range of the vehicle.
CEO Sankar Das Gupta said his strategy is to "seed" his product with established players like India's Tata carmaker, Hummer and other makers of off-road vehicles.
"This is a whole new game. The industry is being reorganized around energy systems," he said. "We don't know which of these is going to grow."
