Venezuelan journalists say: 'No paper, no newspaper'

  1. Printing paper is steadily becoming a scarce commodity in the country as importers can no longer obtain dollars to buy the goods. Due to government efforts to raise the value of the local bolivar, state regulators are said to be tightening the supply of hard currency. One of Caracas' largest newspapers, El Nacional, recently announced it was reducing content by 40 per cent and only had enough stock of paper to last a few weeks.
The government has also refused to place advertisements in pro-opposition newspapers, what many say is a troubling development in a country where the largest companies and exporters are government owned.
  2. Venezuelans discussed the issue using the hashtags #SinPapelnoHayPeriodico (No paper, no newspaper) and #MarchaPorlaPrensa (March for the press) were each used more than 20,000 times on February 10.
La prensa exige papel Está en juego la libertad de expresión y el sustento de mas de 30.000 familias #SinPapelNoHayPeriodico
