first, jc, i think "cahoots" says it all.

second, i only see 2 reasons outside of the normal kry mngt greed they would pay oppie.

one is because he demanded it for testimony/facts in his possesion critical to the case (almost sounds like extortion).

two would be because he has facts in his posession that would cripple kry's case or hurt other members of mngt (almost sounds like extortion).

pretty typical kry. these guys are all getting older so this may be thier last big hoorah. might as well go all the way.
