I think this may be far fetched. Going back over the articles regarding his reported illnesses which mentioned only his knee, i believe his cancer is well advanced and first started in Feb 2011.

With cancer when you first notice it, it has already been incubating for at least 3 to 6 m before. So he is into it for a full year now it seems likely.
