Crystallex mining introduces international lawsuit against the Venezuelan government

February 16, 2011, 04:48 PM | Erika Hidalgo López | Emen .- The Canadian mining company Crystallex announced today that it filed an application for arbitration before the Additional Facility of the World Bank's International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID ) against the Republic of Venezuela in accordance with the Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Venezuela for the Promotion and Protection of Investments (the Treaty).

The arbitration is defined by the mining company following the unilateral dissolution of the Government of Venezuela of a contract mining operation in one of the largest gold deposits in the world, Las Cristinas, in Bolivar State.

The claim is for breach of the treaties of protection against expropriation, unfair and unequal treatment and discrimination.

Crystallex will attempt to recover the investments made in Venezuela, in addition to losses caused by the timeout environmental permits to be adopted by the Ministry of Environment, so expect to be compensated with 3,800 million dollars.
