China's interest in gold is solely to make their currency the world's standard by backing it with the yellow metal in their vaults. That is why they are buying the stuff on the spot market and mining what they can on their soil. They are more than happy to use their US dollar reserves to purchase "real" assets before the value of those reserves diminishes.
