I just read an article ("Guyana Gold Rush" by Thomas Schuster) from a resource magazine I received today about the connection between Las Cristinas , the Guiana Shield and the Birimian Shield of West Africa were once connected, Conceptual reconstruction strongly suggest that these continental terrains were geologically linked and developed simultaneously, here is some info I pulled from Google on the Birimian Greenstone Belt, some of you who invest in other gold companies may recognize most of these mines, the grades and ounces of gold is staggering, there may still be millions of ounces yet to be discovered at LC, its an lengthy article and I can't (won't, lazy can't cut and paste) type it all, but a good read
Why Burkina Faso?
We consider Burkina Faso to be highly prospective for large tonnage open-pittable gold deposits as it hosts approximately 22 percent (by area) of the interpreted Birimian Greenstone belts of West Africa, in which 178 million ounces of gold have been discovered over the past one hundred years.
This includes 110 million ounces in adjoining Ghana, that contains 19 percent of these prospective rocks; 33 million ounces in Mali with 10 percent; and 12 million ounces in Guinea with 11 percent; yet Burkina Faso has yielded just 12 million ounces at this time from limited modern day exploration (Figure 2; Table 1).
Figure 2: Location of the major gold deposits in West Africa relative to the Birimian greenstone belts.
Table 1. Summary highlights of the quantity of gold (million ounces) discovered in West African countries relative to the area of prospective Birimian greenstone within each country.
The data in Table 1 would suggest that limited mineral exploration in Burkina Faso is yet to realise the potential gold endowment of that country and it remains highly prospective for further gold discoveries.Since the revision of the Mining Act (in 2003), six new gold mines have commenced production and another 5 projects each with over 1Moz are likely to go into production over the next few years.
