this can be good ammo for Chavez The WikiLeaks website, much to the embarrassment of the U.S., has revealed over 250,000 secret diplomatic cables many discussing different Latin American country’s and their leaders. The website publishes documents leaked from government’s worldwide with the stated purpose to eliminate corruption. We took a look at what the U.S. is alleged to have said and thought about Latin America. Here’s what has been under covered so far: * ARGENTINA: Documents show that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sought an assessment of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, seeing her as mentally unstable. * HONDURAS: The U.S. in a June, 2009 cable blame the Honduran legislative and judicial branch for the coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya. The cable insinuates that the power in Honduras didn’t know how to deal with a corrupt President so they “fell back on what they knew” ordering the coup. * PARAGUAY: In 2008 the U.S. was investigating whether there were terrorist cells operating in the border of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. More damaging it appears the U.S. believed Paraguay sheltered Iran and Islamic terrorists. The memos also show the U.S. doubted Paraguay’s commitment to the “war on terror.” * VENEZUELA: A September 2009 memo between a French diplomat and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon label Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as “crazy” and accuses him of turning his country “into another Zimbabwe,” which is also an insult to Zimbabwe. Other cables show the U.S. attempting to get Latin American countries to isolate Chavez. Latin American countries are carefully reviewing the leaked documents before deciding on what their next steps will be. Numerous U.S. ambassadors to Latin America have already issued statements of apology to their counterparts.
