Suspected hackers in Chavez's Twitter account

CARACAS — Hackers appear to have broken into the Twitter account of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, according to Interior Minister Tareck El Aissami.

The account had shown "irregularities" since September 22 and at least three messages in @chavezcandanga were not written by the populist Venezuelan leader, El Aissami said.

"They entered it without authorization," the minister said, adding that it was being fixed so that the president could keep sending messages, on the eve of key elections to renew Venezuela's National Assembly.

Venezuelan officials had sought help from the United States for an investigation by the administrators of the popular social network.

Chavez receives hundreds of Twitter messages daily and has more than 850,000 followers.
