the definition depends on the source.

for management "cautiously optimistic" means: we're optimistic we'll get this done and make a buttload on options! but we're cautious enough that we did'nt actually buy any of our stock.

for us "cautiously optimistic" means: i'm cautious not to buy the expensive macoroni and cheese but i'm optimistic that someday i can afford it....
