VENEZUELA: BOLIVIAN PRESIDENT TO MEET CHAVEZ, PUTIN

Bolivian President Evo Morales will travel to Caracas to meet with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Xinhua reported April 2. Morales will try to close a trade deal with Chavez, said spokesman Ivan Canelas. While Putin is visiting Venezuela, Morales will meet to discuss a $100 million Russian credit for the Bolivian army. Bolivian Economy Minister Luis Arce Catacora will accompany Morales.

VENEZUELA: PUTIN MAY DISCUSS BUYING OIL REFINERIES

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is likely to discuss the possibility of Russian energy company Rosneft buying four oil refineries in Germany from Venezuela's state-run petroleum company PDVSA, RBC News reported April 2. Industry sources said Putin is likely to ask for a 50 percent stake in Ruhr Oil, currently co-owned by PDVSA and British Petroleum, whose German refineries have a total production capacity of about 1 million barrels per day. Rosneft said in an April 2 statement that while it was in talks with PDVSA "on various issues," there has been no proposal to buy a stake in German refineries.

VENEZUELA, RUSSIA: AGREE ON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PLANS

Venezuela and Russia have agreed to draft plans on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the Latin American country, RIA Novosti reported April 3. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told a joint news conference in Caracas that he and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin are ready to start drafting the first nuclear plant project.
