BEIJING, 2 (AFP). - Chinese President Hu Jintao, held in mid-April visits to Brazil, Venezuela, an ally of Beijing on the mainland, and Chile, said yesterday the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hu will attend a summit on nuclear safety convened on 12 and 13 April in Washington, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang.
After traveling for an official visit to Brazil where he will also participate in the second summit of the big emerging markets (BRIC: Brazil, Russia, India and China) of 14 to 17 April, said Qin Gang.
BRIC leaders, an informal group met for the first time in June 2009 in Ekaterinburg (central Russia).
The four emerging powers, who hope to gain influence on the world stage, then warned against the domination of the dollar and discussed ways to strengthen their currencies.
Hu Jintao will continue its tour with an official visit to Venezuela, a staunch ally of China since the coming to power of President Hugo Chavez, from 17 to 18 April and a working visit on April 18 to Chile, who is recovering from the devastating earthquake in late February.
"The visit of President Hu Jintao to Brazil, Venezuela, and Chile is intended to deepen friendship, enhance mutual trust, expand cooperation and seek common development," said Qin Gang.
"This visit is of great importance in promoting the friendship between China and the three countries (...) We believe it will be a great success," he said.
The last time Hu Jintao visited Latin America was in 2008 (Cuba, Costa Rica and Peru).
Since the first Chinese president's visit to the mainland in 2004 (Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Cuba), China increased its presence in the area, which has important projects, especially oil supply, gas and derivatives with Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia .
