Mining dull

A bleak picture awaits the new president of the Chamber of Mines of Venezuela (Camiven), Luis Rojas Machado, who warned on Wednesday that for the period 2008-2009, the production of metallic minerals fall in more than 15% while the low extraction of non-metal is projected at seven per cent.

Rojas, who was elected yesterday at the XVII General Assembly Camiven (which chose the new board for the period 2009-2011), he assumed the leadership of the guild with some alarming statistics regarding the prospects for development of mining in Venezuela.

"The mining sector is quite depressed because of the global, disinvestment and lack of plans to strengthen mining.

Over the past five years have not seen new projects. There is a cement with the Iranians that possibly be ready by 2011 when due to be working three years ago, "said Rojas.

The spokesman noted that the construction sector is one of the most affected by the lack of new mines, which together with the constraints now being imposed on the State to the construction of the country, outlining the stagnation of new buildings and infrastructure.

Camiven warned that the reserves currently being exploited, they are not doing proper maintenance to continue producing more resources, so the lack of mineral neglect is also a possibility that emerges in the future.

"There is no investment in drilling or identification of new reserves, it has also significantly decreased employment in the mining sector," said the manager.

CAMINOS unworkable
With respect to the grant that has given the Venezuelan government to the Russian company Rusoro Mining to mine gold in the Bolivar Rojas believes that while foreign investment is needed to strengthen the sector, the fact that the Executive provides properties that already have other dealers is something that can not be adopted. "Rusoro founded new businesses or develop new projects," the answer is no. Purchased existing projects, "he criticized.

The outgoing president of Camiven, Gilberto Sanchez, said he was concerned about the high discretion is happening in the enforcement of mine, and the change that you want to give some state governments to the exploitation of regional laws which affect the mineral non-metallic.

"They took an impressive speed to change the laws as if it were the oil industry. The scheme is being applied to the mining sector is not compatible with the oil pattern," warned Sanchez
