At the Colegio de Ingenieros de Puerto Ordaz, was presented the forum "Towards a model of sustainable development for Guyana", an event which brought together representatives of basic industries in the area, to expose more consistent action plans pointing to the rise of the city as an independent country's economic engine.
Nelson Rondon, representing the College of Engineers of Venezuela, Guyana branch, during the forum, said that the model of sustainable development, is an old argument which seems to clash with government policies and therefore, it is becoming exhausted.
"We believe in the different strata of the area (employers, unions, guilds and organized society), but we must rethink and establish a new model of development for the city," said Rondon.
He assured that this new model should be supported in an economic platform that is directly related to technological innovation, economic growth, quality of life, citizen participation, freedom and above all the culture and ethics.
The approach is that Guyana is known for being the first planned city of Venezuela, the second in Latin America and the eighth of the world, why should not be subject to the conditions as found today.
"It is totally ramshackle in terms of infrastructure and in terms of keeping them, hence the importance of managing what is the concept of sustainable development," said President of the College of Engineering.
What was widely persecuted in his speech, was meeting the needs of the present without compromising that of future generations and if they check what is happening in Guyana, it becomes evident that goes in the opposite direction to the development sustainable.
Rondon also alluded that the most important metal park in Latin America (which is located in the region), has only one operation and use of 40%, which is not justified, which is the industrial empire of Venezuela, whose seat is the core business, and they stay put in check the competitive advantages at the international level, taking into account factors in our favor as rivers, springs, deposits of bauxite, timber and gold.
Faced with this and says Rondón, unjustified misuse of resources, far from the stoppage of the works being made in the previous government, creating a mess as administrative, operational and most serious of all a range of core business streams and practically without any operation.
Then and now
The secretary general of the National Union of Public Employees (Sunep), engineer Juan Gomez, in his presentation on the situation in the Venezuelan Guayana Corporation (CVG), talked about the before and after it.
"In 1960, CVG has been set up to manage the development of Guyana, being the institution responsible for all projects that are brewing here. It was characterized by generating employment and ensuring the quality of life for workers, in addition to being a national and international reference, "said Gomez.
In his presentation said that the Corporation was known in all the countries of West and East of the world, even with an embassy. The prestige was one of the insignia of that institution, in which the professional integrity of staff in height and well prepared.
Now, the CVG is "torn" and does not have the professional career that started in it.
"Before the institution was not included in the policy, and now they came from many years of professional career has actually been dismissed without cause or reason, violating all principles of the Constitution and the Labor Act," said Gomez.
Nor is the management of project evaluation, which was in charge of reviewing all the plans to execute in Guyana.
"Workers who came to the Corporation along with Sucre Figuerella were dismissed, along with projects that have left could be relegated to the CVG, the use of the zone in which many companies can be created, for example relevant aluminum industry and services, "said general secretary Sunep.
It also praised the CVG has been declining and the problem is happening in other core businesses, is currently happening in it.
The contribution or benefits to which they are not the workers are being given, but the senior management it is enjoying its benefits. Gomez said that the new administration has not sat down with the workers or with Guyanese, to explain what will be the new role of the company.
In 2006 revenues will denigrate Edelca to CVG. This year, published in Official Gazette of the corporation not owned by CVG iron.
Analyzing this situation, it is necessary to ask how to maintain and further its development, as was also observed from the central government nor the infrastructure and housing will be the responsibility of the Corporation.
But Gomez said that is not yet lost everything and they intend to keep fighting to keep CVG development and generating employment.
Who is to blame?
The representation of the mining industry ferrosiderúrgico was coined by the engineer Pedro.
He said the current situation of Sidor is the responsibility of those who should represent the interests and were nonchalant and not monitor the company in all its senses.
"The idea is to attribute the decline in media production division of Sidor to Amazon, but mismanagement is the unjust treatment that had the benefit of workers and not sharing without meanness performance, efficiency and profitability , "said Acuna, then insisted that the situation was validated by state officials.
The central theme of the forum (model development), was approached by José María Fernández, doctor training in employment and regional development.
He argued that the model of development applicable to Guyana, which was born and raised in accordance with an economic model, well studied, makes it a place where there are reserves and resources to invest in large amounts of money in so-called motor companies .
Such industries require large investments in capital and human resources. Involves developing downstream, generating external economies for its maintenance.
"I propose a model for local development. The first thing to do is that guayacitanos and forces of the city we engage in the definition of an economic development model. You can not talk about development if the community does not participate actively in defining their future. The second focus is to see all the potential they have and not just those posed by the core businesses, "said Fernandez.
For example, this city center must be an engine of economic and social development of the south east of the country, Guyana, and their companies should not look only to the basic industries but the full potential of the Orinoco oil belt, trade tourism, service quality, knowledge, universities, research institutes, consultancies and metalworking industries, should play an important and fundamental.
Business view
On behalf of the Business Alliance, Fernando Goyenechea, attended the forum organized by Fundatrabajo, which focused on the work aspect and business crisis.
"I am giving the position of the Business Alliance, which has been stated and I repeat presented since January 29 to all public and national authorities. In that vein, we want to focus the light of the ideas for events of the crisis and restore them to transcend beyond the silver to be and even the number of companies that are already closed. "
Goyenechea raised investment and "leap forward" as a means to begin solving the problem.
