SUMMIT TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS TEMPORARILY LIFTED
The traffic restrictions which were in place today (Friday April 17, 2009) to facilitate the arrival of Heads of State and Government and their delegations for the Fifth Summit of the Americas have been temporarily lifted.
As a result, Gold Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Steve Waldron advises that the normal flow of traffic will continue along the route between the Piarco International Airport and Port of Spain.
However, ACP Waldron says the traffic restrictions will go back into effect on Sunday April 19, 2009 to accommodate the departure of the delegations.
ACP Waldron also thanks the public for their continued cooperation during the exercise.
NAVAL OPERATION – FIFTH SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
There has been some speculation about the nature of the naval security surrounding the Fifth Summit of the Americas, specifically suggesting that ships from the USA and Canadian navies are operating within Trinidad and Tobago territorial waters.
To clarify the situation, the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Edmund Dillon said: “The only ships operating within Trinidad and Tobago territorial waters are those belonging to the Trinidad and Tobago security services and those belonging to the navies of our CARICOM partners.”
He added that “the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force continues to work closely with our CARICOM colleagues to ensure a safe and secure Fifth Summit of the Americas”.
ALLEGED INCIDENT AT PIARCO
The National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the Americas has been informed of an alleged incident which took place at the Piarco International Airport at around 2:15 this afternoon (Friday April 17, 2009) involving local security officials and security officials attached to the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
The National Secretariat is liaising with officials of the Ministry of National Security to determine the facts surrounding the alleged incident.
These enquiries are at an early stage and as soon as more information is available the National Secretariat will update the media.
