TORONTO — A 36-year-old Toronto businessman reported missing last week has been found dead in Brampton, Ont., Peel Regional Police confirmed.

The body of George Koutroubis, a restaurateur who also owned a UPS franchise and several rental properties, was found a day earlier inside his BMW sport-utility vehicle, parked in an apartment lot on Steeles Avenue West.

No suspects are in custody and police would not disclose the cause of death beyond saying there were “obvious signs of trauma.”

However, a source familiar with the investigation said Mr. Koutroubis had been badly beaten.

The killing marks Peel's third homicide of the year.

Mr. Koutroubis had no criminal record and his sudden disappearance stirred alarm among his family and friends.

Detectives said they are exploring whether his death is connected to the fact that along with his other business interests, he also acted as a bookie, expediting sports bets.

He and his new wife had been about to embark on a Caribbean cruise when he vanished last Tuesday. The couple had no children.
