FANB prepares action against illegal mining in Bolivar


Ciudad Bolivar, Feb. 17 ABN .- The Bolivarian National Armed Force
(FANB) is ready to conduct military operations on land, water and air
from any activity of illegal mining by individuals or groups in areas
under protection of the state of Bolivar environmental laws,
committed to human rights standards established in the Constitution.

This was stated by the commander of Military Region of the Guayana
FANB, Major General Antonio Félix Velásquez, during installation of a
conference on human rights and constitutional principles in criminal
investigations, in Ciudad Bolivar, the capital.

In this conference, speakers from various agencies geared to military
personnel quartered in Bolivar state on the legal procedures to
protect the environmental resources of the country, as well as
provisions authorizing the FANB to act in patrol operations, capture
and neutralization of dedicated individuals illegal mining activities
in protected areas, such as watersheds in the Caroni and Caura
rivers.

This activity was attended by representatives of the Ombudsman's
Office, the ministries of the People for the Environment (Minamb) and
Basic Industry and Mining (Mibam), as well as the environmental
prosecutor with jurisdiction, as well as police agencies and national
tax and state.

"With the firm intention to counteract the development of illegal
mining activities and contribute to the Strategic Operational Command
(CEO) to secure the internal order of the nation, we are able to
conduct joint military operations aimed at environmental protection
and public order in Bolivar state, "said the officer.

He explained that these operations will involve troops from the
Infantry Division V of the Commando Jungle River National Bolivarian
Navy, both based in Ciudad Bolivar, in addition to the units of the
National Guard and Air Force located in Ciudad Guayana and the rest
of the state.

The officer explained that the intention is to preserve the FANB the
country's natural resources in a framework of respect for human
rights, so this conference to improve awareness of all parties on the
current legal regime against mining.

"Operation will soon be Tepuy to operate militarily in areas where
mining activities are detected illegal invasion of forests and river
basins, currency flight, human trafficking, prostitution, smuggling
of fuel, and selling illegal liquor operation timber, among other
crimes linked to illegal exploitation of gold and diamond, "he said.

He explained that the first actions will be developed in Piar
Municipality of Bolivar state, where it was detected the penetration
of Venezuelans and foreigners who are dedicated to destroying forests
and rivers to exploit the gold.
