The Uruguayan government conceded that Venezuela has not fully complied with the trade agreements signed with that country, including export of dairy products worth USD 30 million.
Uruguayan Minister of Economy Álvaro García; Foreign Minister Gonzalo Fernández and the Director of Political Affairs of the Uruguayan Foreign Affairs Ministry, Elbio Roselli, attended on Friday a meeting with the Finance Committee of Congress to discuss issues related to the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) and domestic trade policies, AP reported.
At the meeting, Sergio Abreu, a Senator of the Uruguayan opposition party (Partido Nacional) asked the government officials, "what was the position of Venezuela in the Mercosur, as neither the Congress of Brazil nor the Paraguayan Congress has approved its participation as a full member." Abreu added that "Venezuela has not complied with trade obligations with Mercosur as to say that it is a full partner of the regional trade agreement." Roselli replied that the government of President Hugo Chávez has not fully complied with the trade agreements signed with Uruguay, but then asked the phrase be deleted from the stenographic version.
