Richard Gallardo, chair of the National Workers Union (Unete) in central Aragua state and former candidate for deputy; Luis Hernández, ex candidate for mayor on behalf of opposition Unidad Socialista Izquierda party, and Carlos Requena, Unete national coordinator, were killed on Thursday morning.
It was disclosed that Hernández had plans to challenge on Friday the results of the election won by the new mayor, Aldo Lovera, of pro-government United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
The three leaders met on the eve in a night club, where they discussed the possibility of challenging the election results. On leaving the site, a man riding a motorcycle shot the three leaders dead.
Followers of the leaders staged a protest on Friday morning that made neighboring businesses close their doors for fear of looting and clashes.
