Venezuela says may soon detain opposition governor

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — A senior Venezuelan official says a major opponent of President Hugo Chavez could soon be detained on corruption charges.

Vice President Ramon Carrizalez says Gov. Manuel Rosales could be detained after Nov. 23's mayoral and gubernatorial elections.

He says at that point authorities won't have to adhere to a special procedure for detaining top officials.

Rosales is the popular two-time governor of Zulia state. He's running for mayor of Venezuela's second largest city, Maracaibo.

Carrizalez said Saturday that "everything indicates" Rosales is preparing to flee to Miami.

Last month, Chavez threatened to make Rosales "a prisoner" for corruption and plotting his assassination. Rosales denies the charges.
