A painting by Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has sold at auction for a staggering $255,000 in Venezuela.

The painting which was painted while Chavez was serving a 2 sentence after a failed coup attempt in 1992 shows the view from his cell with the words "The mill of the gods grinds slowly!" painted underneath.

The final price for the painting which began at US$14,000 was more than expected but the work has become considered a symbolic part of the history of the South American nation and was auctioned to raise funds for the socialist party
