The ONLY hope for any type of cleanup (let alone responsible mining) is for the private sector to be involved. The Venezuelan govenment can't even meet the financial obligations it has already made to these miners in terms of financial assistance already promised to them. It's laughable to think that Venezuela is going to clean this mess up when they can't even prevent it from happening in the first place. We're operating under the impression that Sanz has more power than Ortega to decide whether to mine or not mine and that Hugo has left this call entirely up to him. Presuming this is the case, I'll acknowledge the possibility that the first legal deadline was allowed to expire in order to allow the government\Minamb to save face. It is a little unnerving that even after Ortega admitted that mining MIGHT proceed after she initially stated that it wouldn't be allowed that she reiterated her initial position. If the object was for her to be allowed to save face by having the director that reports to her take the fall for the "bad call", you would have thought that she would have kept her mouth shut after opening up the possibility for mining to proceed. After expiration of the June 2nd deadline, I would think the coast is clear for Sanz to give the green light. If we have a chance, I would CERTAINLY expect Sanz to move quickly....and not let the next 90 business day legal rebuttal period to drag on for too long. And don't give me that line about this "being Venezuelan time". If Sanz is the man he will decide quickly or we are doomed to the death of a thousand ticks of the clock.
